Hi everyone. I am Kade your new VP Activity. I was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, and I moved to the UK back in September 2023 to pursue my undergraduate here at the University of Surrey in Aerospace Engineering. During my time here I was involved in a lot of societies like West Indian Society, Formula Student, Musical Theatre, Stag TV among others.
How would you describe your role in one sentence?
As VP Activity, I represent and support all student clubs, societies and events as well as make sure students have the best opportunities to get involved, express themselves and create unforgettable memories outside of academics.
How did you first get involved with the Students’ Union?
I first got involved through joining societies in second year as well as starting the West Indian Society. I became more active in planning events supporting student groups which sparked my passion for student representation and community building. In my third year, I became a Course Rep for my course. That experience opened my eyes to the power of student voice and how much impact we can have.
What is your favourite memory from your involvement in the Students’ Union so far?
Helping bring the first ever Stag Hill Carnival to life as President of the West Indian Society was definitely a highlight. It was such a proud moment to see an idea we fought so hard for become a sold out celebration of culture and community.
Why did you choose to run for election as a Sabbatical Officer?
I wanted to be a voice for students who often feel overlooked and to empower our societies, sports teams and cultural groups to thrive. I knew I had the drive, creativity and experience to make student life more vibrant and inclusive.
Which part of your manifesto are you most excited to get started on?
I’m most excited to work closely with our societies and sports clubs especially cultural societies that often don’t get the visibility or recognition they deserve. I want to be present at events, attend games and actively support the amazing work our students are doing. My goal is to make sure every group, whether it’s a sports team or a cultural society, feels celebrated and supported by the Union because they are the heart of our student community.
What one tip would you give a new student joining Surrey in Freshers this year?
Definitely go to different events happening during Freshers week. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, meet different people because you never know those same friends end up being your friends for life.
