Introduction:
Hi, I’m Sam (she/her). I did both my undergraduate and master’s degrees here at Surrey - my UG in Modern Languages (French and Spanish), and an MSc in Psychology (Conversion). I love travelling, doing mindfulness activities like yoga, and being out in nature. I am also obsessed with jellycats and enjoy playing on my Nintendo switch or watch TV. This is my second year as Vice-President Support, and alongside this role, I also work in a crisis mental health service.

How would you describe your role in one sentence?
My role is to represent student support needs across campus - I attend wellbeing meetings, lead on projects, and host events, all with the aim of improving student wellbeing.

How did you first get involved with the Students’ Union?
In my second year, I was President of the Politics Society, which led the VP Community at the time to encourage me to apply for Nightline Publicity Officer. From there, I took on various roles including Wellbeing Champion, being a Course Rep, various society positions, and was a Support Zone Part-Time Officer during my MSc.

What is your favourite memory from your involvement in the Students’ Union so far?
Definitely presenting awards at the Union Ball! It was such a proud moment to celebrate students and their incredible contributions to the Surrey community.

Why did you choose to run for election as a Sabbatical Officer?
I’d been really involved in Union support services and also worked as a Peer Supporter for the Centre for Wellbeing. During my MSc, I deferred two modules. During this break I worked in a SEN school and then on return starting working in crisis support at Safe Haven. Mental health and disability work is what fulfils me most - I’m passionate about improving wellbeing on a grater level. As someone who’s faced challenges navigating support at Surrey, I want to be approachable and help students feel confident reaching out.

Which part of your manifesto are you most excited to get started on?
I’m really excited about my year-long gender empowerment campaign, which focuses on gender-based support and the LGBTQIA+ community, especially supporting our transgender students. I can’t wait to collaborate with our LGBTQIA+ Society on this project.

What one tip would you give a new student joining Surrey in Freshers this year?
Get involved! It might feel daunting, but stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to discover new passions and make friends. Everyone's in the same boat - give it a go!
